songwriter. She is the older sister
of Hilary Duff.
Duff was born in Houston, Harris County, Texas. She is two and a half
years older than her sister, the popular musician and actress Hilary Duff.
Her mother, Susan Colleen (née Cobb), a homemaker and film producer
(co-executive producer of A Cinderella Story (2004) and producer of The
Perfect Man (2005) and Material Girls (2006), as well as the manager of
her sister Hilary). Her father, Robert Erhard (Bob) Duff, is a partner and
owner in a chain of convenience stores with father John B. Duff and who
resides at the family home in Houston to maintain the family's business.
She began her acting career as an offshoot of her early dance training.
Growing up in Texas, Duff began ballet at an early age. By age ten, Duff
landed a role in the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company’s production of
The Nutcracker.
Duff's early career started by making guest appearances on made for
television movies such as Hope and True Women and on TV shows such as The
Amanda Show. In addition to guest-starring roles on Chicago Hope, Boston
Public, and Third Watch, Duff became a familiar face starting in late 2002
as Amy Saunders/Sanders on the children's television series, Lizzie
McGuire. The star of that show was Duff’s younger sister, Hilary, whose
own acting career was just starting to take off at the time. Hilary’s
career would quickly eclipse her sibling's in short time, but Haylie would
continue to maintain a presence on the small screen.
In 2004, Duff made a guest appearances on That's So Raven as Katina Jones.
After making guest appearances on television, Duff received her first role
in a feature film when she was cast in Napoleon Dynamite. The film earned
her her first Teen Choice Award win. She then by making guest appearances,
which include Joan of Arcadia and American Dreams. She also lent her voice
talent to the Christmas animation In Search Of Santa which was targeted at
kids and which also featured sister Hilary Duff. In 2005, Duff joined the
cast of the TV show 7th Heaven, playing Sandy Jameson, best friend to
Simon's girlfriend in A Pregnant Stage, where she got pregnant by Martin
Brewer.
In summer 2006, Duff joined the Broadway cast of Hairspray, portraying
mean girl Amber Von Tussle, and playing the part through the beginning of
Following Material Girls, Duff appeared in various made-for-television or
straight-to-DVD movies including Nightmare, My Sexiest Year, Legacy,
Backwoods, Love Takes Wing, Love Finds a Home and most recently My Nanny's
Secret.
On January 22, Duff landed a role in the show Barely Legal, which her
sister appears in, as "the big sister who visits from time to time." An
update to Hilaryduff.com on July 1, 2009 stated that Hilary decided to
turn down NBC's script for the pilot because it did not match the initial
pitch.
Throughout 2009 and 2010 she appeared in Fear Island, Tug and Slightly
Single in L.A.. She will also appear in the film Foodfight alongside
Charlie Sheen, Hilary Duff and Eva Longoria but due to distribution issues
the film is yet to have an official release.
Duff has recorded numerous singles for various soundtracks with her
sister, with most of them appearing on the Disneymania discs. She was
featured on legendary rapper Kool G Rap's album Half A Klip, providing the
background vocals on the track "On The Rise Again" produced by DJ Premier.
She was recording a debut album stated for release in 2005-2006 but was
dropped from her record company. She had supposedly completed work on her
debut album Walk the Walk due mid 2008. Duff confirmed that this was
false; she is not working on or releasing an album at this time. Haylie
also sang "A Whatever Life" for the Stuck In The Suburbs soundtrack and
"Sweetest Pain" for the Raising Helen soundtrack.
Duff was involved in a court battle with Paris Hilton over the song
Screwed. Both Duff and Hilton had recorded it in 2004, Duff having planned
it for her album, and Hilton for it to be released as her debut single,
however after what seemed like Hilton had withdrawn from the fight, she
was awarded the song by the court, and Duff was left without it. Even
though she won the battle for "Screwed", Hilton released "Stars Are Blind"
instead, releasing "Screwed" in Asia only.
Duff wrote or co-wrote several songs for her sister Hilary's albums,
Metamorphosis and Hilary Duff, as well as the song "Gypsy Woman", on
Hilary's fourth album, Dignity. |
